Dry Cleaners' Guide: Dress Shirts That Last!

We all know that feeling, the moment you find the perfect dress shirt. From the way it looks, to the way it fits, everything is simply perfect. Now imagine the feeling when your favorite shirt doesn't look or fit the way it did when it was first purchased. It's very frustrating!

As a lifelong dry cleaner, I can tell you with certainty, that all dress shirts are NOT created equal.

We all invest our hard-earned money into clothing. Whether you spend $25 or $225 for a dress shirt, you want it to last! Over the years, I have cleaned, pressed, and starched too many shirts to count. As a result, I have been able to compile a list of shirt brands that consistently outlast the competition.

In my dry cleaning facilities, I want the clothes to look perfect. I want my customers to look and feel great. My staff and I truly love what we do. There is nothing more frustrating than when I am working with an item of clothing that cannot be restored to like-new condition. No matter what I do, some clothes just can't be fixed. This happens all too often because of how it was manufactured or the material used.

Almost all shirts look and feel great in the store. So, how can you tell if the dress shirt will be durable before you buy?

That is a difficult task, even for me. In my experience, the shirt brands I recommend look, fit, and clean great from the first time they are worn until the last. The other brands on this list would never be found in my closet. In the past, I have shared my list with family and close friends. Now, I am sharing my list with you! Please don't buy another dress shirt until you have read through my recommendations below. Life is too short for a bad dress shirt!

Shirt Level High End
This is a conservative dress shirt that is very comfortable to wear. It has high quality construction that maintains its look and shape even after several wash cycles. It is a bit on the expensive side, but well worth the money. GQ magazine says, "every man should own at least one."
Brand

Propercloth

Shirt Level High End
Propercloth is an online custom shirt company that is relatively new to the market. The company starts by asking a series of questions about your build, style, and comfort level to create a profile. Once your profile is established, you pick the style of shirt and then the material. Your custom shirt is then made to order and ships to your front door. So far, I have only seen a few of these shirts come through my plant. However, I really like how the shirt performs in the cleaning process. The shirts overall construction appears to be impeccable. If you choose to buy this shirt, I suggest picking a heavier weight material for longevity. This is currently GQ magazines "favorite" shirt.

This is the shirt that makes a statement! This high-quality shirt boasts enormous popularity for its styling and quality. I highly recommend this shirt to all my friends and family. (Please note, if you like starch, make sure you check the label for silk. Some Robert Graham shirts contain silk and cannot be starched.)

Mid-level fashion shirt. This shirt holds up longer than expected for its construction type. Athletic cut shirt that is a great buy for those who are fashion conscious.
Brand

Ralph Lauren

This was a great shirt in the 80's and it's still a great shirt today. Oh, the days of a polo golf shirt, collar flipped up and a plaid polo button down over it with stone washed jeans. I'm reminded of that every time I pass a Ralph Lauren display. The only issue these shirts have ever had, is with the button-down collars. The collar buttons don't last forever. Eventually a hole develops after the buttons have been replaced repeatedly.
Brand

Banana Republic

Yale's Rating

Shirt Level Mid Level
Banana Republic shirts have gone through many transformations since the early 2000's. Overall, they have been a great preforming shirt. Long gone are the buttons too thick to holdup in commercial laundering. This is one of the better buys at the price point. I believe it's a mid-level shirt.
Brand

Cremieux

Yale's Rating
Price $ $
Shirt Level Mid Level
Mid-level relaxed fit shirt, great for casual dress Fridays. A great choice when buying a linen shirt. (life expectancy for linen is much lower than that of cotton. You should only expect 1 or 2 seasons from linen shirts.)
Brand

Calvin Klein

Yale's Rating
Price $ $ $
Shirt Level Mid Level
This mid-level shirt is made by Van Heusen. It usually contains high levels of polyester for durability. The down side to shirts that contain polyester over 20% is the difficulty in removing oils. This is most noticeable when the oils from your skin develop into a "the ring around the collar." Over the long term the collar on this shirt will shrink and become tight around your neck.
Brand

Roundtree & Yorke Gold Label

Yale's Rating
Price $ $
Shirt Level Mid Level
Initially when this shirt came out they addressed all the major issues of the original Roundtree & Yorke shirt. However, as time has passed, the initial redesign of the shirt has not stayed true. Although the shirt does last a little bit longer than its predecessor, it eventually has the same interfacing issues (binding material inside the cuffs, collar, and along button holes) used in construction shrinks faster than the shirt fabric. The premature shrinking causes visible puckering in the cuffs, collar, and along button holes. This problem cannot be fixed, and the shirts appearance will become objectionable to most people. I cannot recommend this shirt brand.

This is by far the best entry-level shirt. This shirt is for a man who is on a budget, but needs to wear a dress shirt every day. It is limited to very conservative colors and patterns. Stafford shirts not only stand the test of time, but the rigors of daily life and cleanings. In my experience, Stafford shirts can last 8 plus years and over 200 cleanings! For the money, nothing competes with this shirt!
