Your wedding gown, the centerpiece of this magical day, isn't just a dress; it's a symbol of your unique love story. This carefully chosen garment reflects your style, your personality, and your dreams. Preserving it ensures that the memories and emotions woven into its fabric remain as vibrant as the day you walked down the aisle.
But your wedding gown is not just for one day; it can be a cherished family heirloom for generations to come. Wedding gowns, with their delicate fabrics and intricate details, can be vulnerable to the passage of time. Stains, yellowing, and fabric degradation are common issues. Preserving your gown protects it against these natural processes. By preserving it, you create an opportunity to pass down a piece of your own history, love, and style to your children, grandchildren, or other family members. Ensure your love story lives on with Yale's expert wedding dress cleaning and preservation service.

Whether having worn a new gown or an heirloom, most brides want to preserve their gown. We encourage you to have it cleaned as soon as possible following your wedding day. It is very important to get all the stains (seen or unseen) removed before storing the dress. Stains left untreated for an extended period of time are often impossible to remove or can even cause holes to form.

After Yale has professionally preserved your family's important keepsake, it's essential to store it properly to maintain its pristine condition. Here are some key steps to ensure your preserved gown stays as beautiful as the day you walked down the aisle:
Remember that proper storage is key to preserving your cherished gown for generations. By following these steps and entrusting your dress to Yale Cleaners, you're ensuring it remains a beautiful and meaningful family heirloom.

Yes. As soon as your gown arrives at our preservation facility, you’ll receive an email confirming it is safely in our care.
When your gown arrives, our first step is a detailed inspection. We evaluate how it’s made, check for construction or alteration issues, document any stains or fabric damage, and examine delicate details like beading and lace. This helps us determine the safest method to clean and restore your dress.
If your gown is made of raw silk or similarly delicate fabric, we’ll explain any limitations on full restoration. You’ll receive a written inspection report and a personalized cleaning plan. Up to one hour of repair is included; if more is needed, we’ll provide a quote for your approval.
No cleaning begins until you’ve reviewed your gown’s condition and approved the plan.
Every gown begins with a careful inspection so we can select the safest and most effective cleaning method based on its fabric, construction, and condition. Most dresses are gently wet-washed in our custom equipment for the best possible results.
For older gowns or those with yellowing or set-in stains, we may use our oxygen-based restoration bath—a fabric-safe treatment designed to brighten and refresh delicate textiles without the harsh effects of traditional bleach.
From start to finish, your gown is cleaned by our experienced team using processes developed specifically for wedding dresses.
No. Every gown is unique, and we treat it that way. Our team assesses your dress individually and creates a tailored plan to ensure the safest, most effective results.
We routinely remove makeup, wine, grass, sweat, dirt, sugar-based stains, and age discoloration. If a stain threatens the fabric’s integrity, we preserve the dress rather than risk damage.
Yes. Each preservation includes up to one hour of repair work for tears, loose seams, or similar issues. We’ll contact you if additional work is needed and offer pricing for more extensive repairs.
Yes. If you’re planning to wear your gown again, pass it down, or resell it, we offer a Clean-Only service with the same care and attention.
During restoration—especially for older or historic gowns that require an oxygen-based restoration bath—all exposed metal components must be removed. Metals items like zippers, hooks, clasps, and embellishment settings can chemically react with the sodium perborate solution, which may cause the surrounding fabric to discolor or turn black.
Hooks are also removed from all gowns before cleaning, regardless of age. They can easily catch on fabric during the cleaning process, potentially snagging or damaging the gown.
Enamel-coated metals are generally safe and may remain in place. If the gown is going to be worn again or sold, we reinstall the removed pieces after restoration. However, for dresses being placed into long-term storage, we typically only reinstall decorative embellishments. Functional hardware like hooks and zippers can rust over time and may require adjustments for future wear, so leaving them out helps protect the gown and makes future tailoring easier.
To ensure the best long-term results, all gowns must be cleaned by our team before preservation. Proper cleaning is the foundation of successful preservation, more important than the storage materials alone. Even if your dress was cleaned elsewhere, we will professionally clean it again before beginning preservation.
Our preservation chests are museum-quality and built to protect your gown for generations. Each chest is made from acid-free, lignin-free, and sulfur-free materials—specifically engineered to prevent yellowing and fabric breakdown over time.
Inside, your gown is carefully folded with acid-free tissue placed along the folds to prevent permanent creases. A custom bust form is used to support the dress’s shape and enhance presentation. We offer multiple chest sizes to ensure the perfect fit for each gown.
Your gown is carefully folded into our museum-quality preservation chest using acid-free tissue along each fold to help prevent permanent creasing. A bust form is inserted to maintain the gown’s shape and enhance its display. Veils may be included in the chest if they do not contain plastic adhesives or exposed metal, as these can release gases over time.
The inner chest may be wrapped in a muslin cover, included with certain packages or added as an upgrade, before being placed into the outer storage and shipping box. A care and storage guide is included inside the outer box to help you keep your gown in its best condition.
For preservation, we remove all bust pads—including silicone or foam inserts—before packing your gown. These materials can release gases over time (a process known as off-gassing), which may lead to staining or long-term damage to the fabric around them.
If your gown is ever worn again, an alterations professional can easily add new pads that are properly fitted to the person wearing the dress. Removing them now helps protect the integrity of your gown for years to come.
To protect your dress long-term, we do not store accessories inside the preservation chest. Items like veils, shoes, ring pillows, or purses can release gases over time (a process called off-gassing) that may cause discoloration or damage to your gown.
If you’d like to preserve these items, we offer a separate museum-quality accessory box. While it’s made with the same archival materials and care as our gown chest, some accessories—especially those made with plastic, foam, or adhesives—may still naturally age over time. The accessory box helps slow that process and provides a safe, respectful way to store them separately from your dress.
Yes—and we actually encourage it. Once a year, we recommend opening your preservation chest, gently removing your gown, and hanging it up for the day. It’s a great way to check for any issues that may have developed in storage, and it helps release any wrinkles that may have formed while folded.
After enjoying your gown, carefully repack it and reposition the folds using the original tissue to help prevent creasing over time. We suggest doing this on your anniversary—it’s a meaningful tradition and an easy date to remember. Just be sure to wash your hands before handling the dress to keep it in pristine condition.
We offer four preservation options, each designed for different needs and stages of your gown’s life:
Yes. When you receive your preservation kit, it will include a Customer Inspection Card where you can document any special notes, stains you’re concerned about, or repair requests. Our team reviews every card carefully during the professional inspection process.
The full process—from ordering your kit to receiving your preserved gown—typically takes 5–10 weeks. In-house cleaning and preservation takes about 4–6 weeks.
You’ll usually receive your shipping kit within 1–5 business days of placing your order.
Your dress is covered by our 30-year preservation warranty. If your gown yellows or shows signs of deterioration related to the preservation process, we’ll re-clean and preserve it again at no cost.
To maintain coverage, we recommend storing your gown in a cool, dry place—never in attics or garages. A top shelf of a climate-controlled closet is ideal to help protect it for decades to come.
Yes! We proudly preserve a wide range of special garments, including military uniforms, baptism gowns, quinceañera dresses, designer pieces, and family heirlooms. If it’s meaningful to you, it’s worth preserving.
Yes. During the inspection and packaging stages, we photograph or video your gown for our internal records. These images help document your dress’s condition and preservation process. While they are not automatically shared, they are kept on file for a period of time for added security.
Yes! Preservation kits make a meaningful gift for a bride. We even offer a greeting card that can be included with the kit, making it easy to present your gift in a thoughtful, memorable way.
At this time, we offer shipping within the United States only. International service may be available in the future as we expand.
Some gowns are selected to be featured in our behind-the-scenes videos. While not every dress is filmed, we do capture photo and video documentation for all gowns as part of our inspection process. In the future, brides may be able to apply or opt in for a feature.
Never without permission. We focus on the craftsmanship, not the customer. Occasionally, brides choose to “claim” their gown in the comments or send us their wedding photos, but that’s entirely up to them.
Brides often find us through our “how it works” and “how it’s made” videos. What they stay for is the clear difference in expertise, legacy, and care. With family leadership and a decades-long reputation in garment care, we don’t just preserve dresses—we honor memories.
All cleaning and preservation are performed in-house by Yale Cleaners. We do not outsource any part of the process, except occasional contracted sewing repairs, which are managed with the same level of care until we bring that fully in-house.
Yes! Brides in Oklahoma—and beyond—regularly drop off their gowns at Yale Cleaners locations. Local drop-offs include an in-person consultation and save you the hassle of shipping.
Absolutely! Many of our clients ship their gowns from out of state after seeing us online. Whether you’re across the street or across the country, we make the process easy.
